Be-Mar Roller Skating was founded in 1958 by business partners Harland D. Moffitt and Bert Stout to provide mobile roller skating events for children throughout western New York. With the twin goal of entertainment and exercise, Be-Mar offered its services to after-school programs and fundraisers at local educational and recreational institutions. In addition to providing skates, skating instruction and music, Harland and his employees supervised attendees and engaged them in a variety of activities.
After a long and successful run, Harland hung up his roller skates in the mid-1980s and passed the company on to his son and current company president John D. Moffitt. The family business now also includes John's sister Sue Connelly and business partner Kevin Stahl among its 12 employees and currently serves about 200 schools in the Rochester, Syracuse, Buffalo, and Southern Tier Regions.
In recognition of its commitment to fitness, Be-Mar received a grant in 2008 from the Greater Rochester Health Foundation to provide its services to a number of city schools that otherwise would not have had the financial resources to offer such an event.
